Weve all heard legends and stories about the proverbial "barn cars". Many of us have even had fascinations
about someday finding one. Well heres one right now!!! Here, on the auction block, is a genuine Porsche "917"
Lemans race car replica. And yes, this little dandy was just recently removed from twenty-five years of storage in
a dry mid-western barn!
Elite Enterprises, of Cokato, Minnesota, U.S.A, manufactured these stunning 917 replicas sometime in the 1970s.
My research shows that these were manufactured in very limited numbers; perhaps only two hundred fifty of the
"Series A" ever saw the light of day, making them rare indeed. Digging around a bit further, I found that this car was
perhaps the brainchild of a Mr. Knapp, who purportedly was a (if not the) key figure at Elite Enterprises. And for
you movie buffs out there one of these cars appears in the 1977 Disney film, Herbie Goes To Monte Carlo.
Like many other kit cars, these Elite Porsche 917s were of fiberglass construction and designed to be applied to a
moderately modified Volkswagen chassis. This is certainly one of the better looking and more well constructed kits
of that vintage era. If youve looked for one of these lately, then you are aware at how increasingly difficult they are
to locate. (Especially in this condition!) I do have a clear, Illinois title for the car and interestingly, shes titled as a
1970 VW Two Door. This particular car was purchased from a bank in the late-1970s, when the owner defaulted on
his (or her) loan. It has the appearance of possibly never really having been finished.

CHASSIS INFORMATION IS AS FOLLOWS:
(Please Read Carefully!!!)
? Chassis (running gear) is from a 1970 Volkswagen "Beetle" (Bug)
? Chassis number is: #1102-368-840
? Motor (engine) is a purportedly "modified" VW 1600cc four-cylinder (rear-engine).
? Serial number of motor is: # B6394088.
? Motor appears complete, except for the carburetor and therefore, is not currently running.
? Engine does turn freely and there appear to be no issues, but this is ALL I can tell you about it.
? Transmission is a Volkswagen "Automatic Stick Shift" and its working condition is unknown, the transaxle
is the I.R.S. type.
? Brake System is hydraulic drum-type, front and rear.
? Brake system is currently not working and will probably require complete examination and replacement
(minimally) of various hydraulic parts.
? Car was pulled from the barn at low speed, but the steering apparatus appeared to be in good working
order.
? Tires are of the vintage low-profile "racing" bias-ply variety. They are quite old, yet show only extremely
minimal wear. There is no visible damage (checking, etc.) from age, but I cannot and will not estimate how
they would perform or how long they would last.
? Wheels (rims) are of a deep-dished aluminum design and the center caps have a "W". All four wheels are in
good condition and should clean-up and perform nicely.
? I cannot and will not guarantee it, but I do not think any major work will be required to put all the
mechanics of the car in usable condition.
************************************************************************
BODY INFORMATION IS AS FOLLOWS:
(Please Read Carefully!!!)
? Body is fiberglass (gel-coat) and was manufactured by Elite Enterprises.
? Elites assigned body number is: #917-172
? Known variously as an Elite "Type A" or "Series A" signifying that the design is the closest to that of the
original Porsche 917 racecar.
? There is no visible damage anywhere. I can see no evidence of cracking, nor holes. Also I see no
evidence of any repair work (from accidents, etc.)
? Finish is unpainted; rather, it is original silver metal flake gel-coat. (Condition is fair to pretty good,
depending on your perspective might clean-up okeh, but would require polishing, or painting to achieve a
"show appearance".)
? "Gull Wing" doors work just fine as they should. All latches and hinges are in nice working order.
? Rubber door seals are good condition and remain soft and pliable.
? One wiper arm is missing (a minor flaw).
? ALL windows/glass are intact and in good condition.
? Bottom of the car has fiberglass panels on the side and nose that rolls under the car; the vents on the nose
are lined with aluminum.
? One of the headlight covers is broken and the other one has a crack around a mounting screw.
? Floorboards are steel and show some surface rust, but they are seemingly quite solid.
? Car (in photos) may appear to have somewhat of a yellow cast, but this is remaining dirt and should clean
up. (A power washer was utilized in removing the first layer of the twenty-five year accumulation of dust.)
************************************************************************
INTERIOR (AND OTHER) INFORMATION IS AS FOLLOWS:
(Please Read Carefully!!!)
? Instrument panel is quite nice and features a matching set of VDO gauges, which are still appear to be in
great condition.
? Odometer shows 750 miles, but accuracy of this figure is unknown.
? Seats have silver-colored covers and these appear to be in extremely nice condition.
? Previous owner seems to have made an attempt to finish the interior with a silver shag carpeting, but this is
now falling off and it does need readdressing.
? With the proper skills and amount of patience, the new owner (you???) should have no major "hills to
climb" in restoration of the cars interior.
